[Hello, new players! This post is for new and old players to get acquainted with each other in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC). I will be updating the character roster shortly for easy reference. Characters from the first arc who are still wrapping things up in Move 24, feel free to continue; I'll get to y'all shortly.

In the meantime, feel free to introduce yourself in OOC threads, including any information you want other players to have about you (including pronouns if relevant, or what time zones you're usually on, that kind of thing.]

Ashari has just recruited a number of newcomers to the team in the hopes of shoring up its weaknesses and is, in classic Andan fashion, throwing a party on the Cantata (the moth ship formerly known as the Wasp and/or Bumblebee) so that folks can meet-and-greet. There are canapés, and Ashari promised Sulen that there are no recreational substances other than the alcohol if anyone wants it; Ashari is currently in the galley mixing drinks for anyone who asks. The public spaces of the interior have been decorated with somewhat lopsided and overly colorful artificial flowers (the matter printer was feeling cranky) as well as plush moths. There are in addition six friendly levitating baby moths, all wriggly tentacles and eyes, who will gravitate toward anyone who sings to them, and who like to be petted.

For the purposes of this post, "public areas" include the galley, the common room, and the storage hold, which has been temporarily pressed into service as a place where people can hang out. People are also welcome to hold private conversations elsewhere. For the moment, however, the cockpit, engine room, commander's office, and communications room/gunnery are off-limits.

Seyli was out of time, which isn’t to say they were personally out of time for anything, but that they were literally out of their timeline. Clothing was different, the people were different, and for another they were back in the fucking Hexarchate. But at least, this time, they had a purpose beyond fodder. Still, with everything being so different, they were hesitant to dive into any situation.

They scope the room before they walk in, catching the person at the bar, two people chatting around the…moths? And the person in flamboyantly yellow dress, which they appreciate. Seyli puts their back against a wall, squares their shoulder, sets themselves, and watches, but it doesn’t look like anyone is a risk.

[[OOC: Seyli isn't the type to approach strangers first, even if they are suppose to work together.]]

Mafyyil is quite relieved to discover another newcomer also seems to be a bit wary of the party - or whatever it is that's going on there! Thinking that she has to talk to one of these people sooner or later, she decides to pick the person who looks like they feel almost as out of place as she does. So she walks up to Seyli, smiling brightly (and a lot more confidently than she feels).

"Hello! I'm honored to meet you!" (Technically, meeting some barbarian can not be an honor, but she's being very diplomatic, she thinks. And anyway, in this company she cannot be picky.) "Do you happen to know the occasion of", she waves her hand vaguely at the dancing and drinking people and some flying tentacled beings she can't identify, "all this?"

Seyli look at the stranger and blink again, this time noticing...are those fucking plants growing out of her fucking shoulders? Honored to meet them? Their eyes sweep over her, taking her in critically. "You're not from the Hexarchate." Blunt and too the point, he doesn't bother with a greeting, mostly from surprise.

Surprised, Mafyyil blurts out, "Of course not!"

She cannot decide whether this stranger was trying to be offensive or just unaccustomed to civilized behavior, the poor thing. She has heard that some of the more liberal philosophers harbor the notion that hexarchate inhabitants might actually be normal albeit uncivilized humans. Of course, she also knows the life expectancy of liberal philosophers so she never thought about this too much. Still, Mafyyil decides to help the Barbarian out.

"I'm a proper citizen of the empire, on holy duty! So you are, um, a hexarchate person? That's so charming!"

Ash and fire is she a child? Seyli fights to keep their face neutral. "No," they say, without elaborating any further than that. She's so...perky, that it makes them want to be extra bristly.

"Oh, I'm sorry, my mistake!" Mafyyil is very sorry she inadvertently insulted someone. So embarassing! "It's just that I haven't met many...", she swallows the word Barbarians as she feels it would also not be the most polite choice, "people not from the empire before!"

They wonder if she's met many people at all, but they keep that opinion to themself at this point. "I'm sure," they say, voice dry. "And what do you do, or will be doing, here with the rest of us?" Seyli can't possibly imagine what kind of skills this person has...no wonder the person who had recruited them seemed eager to have a solider along.

An uncomfortable question, since Mafyyil also isn't quite sure why she of all people has been sent into the past to bring the hexarchate down. Still, she's been assessed by lots of people and been told this would be just the right thing for her. She trusts her betters although it's clear the transplant work was not as tidy as it could have been, and also, she seems to have aphids, which she can't have contracted in space, so maybe one or two things went wrong there... She decides not to pursue that line of thought.

"Oh, you know", she says, "they gave me this gun and taught me how to use it"... She giggles. Technically, she had not been given that gun she wears in a shoulder holster hidden by blooming peonies, but it couldn't have been stealing if it was from barbarians. She had found it in a locked drawer in the place where they had trained her, and decided she liked the design.

"And you do, um, what exactly?" She hopes this stranger is not responsible for diplomatical missions.

Seyli's eyes about bug out of their head at the comment about the gun. "They gave you a gun," they echo, unable to keep the skepticism from their voice. A smaller, kinder, part of their brain reminded them that there had been bubbly and perky Kel they'd served with in the past...but fucking hell and all the fucking stars in the sky this woman did not look like she knew how to use a gun.

"I'm a solider." They refrain from mentioning their own weapons, which were varied and the many more they hoped they'd gain access to on this mission.

"Uhm, yes! I mean, I'm actually a poet but it seems like the people who took me out on this side of time were not much interested", Mafyyil says. She tries not to sound too unhappy about that. "Although they were nice enough to give me some poetry books and a guide to writing in Hexarchate style!" (She decides not to mention the book in question had been called Poems for Dummies. Also, she had been more confused than enlightened by a small volume containing what would have made nice if uninspired Blessings of the Fields if the barbarian author had not decided to mix their metaphors with something referring to, if she'd understood this correctly, archaic forms of human reproduction.) "Still, that's okay. Everybody has been really lovely!"

"A poet." Seyli isn't sure they heard her correctly. "You're a poet with a gun. Are you...any good at using your gun?" There could be stranger things in the galaxy, but of all the people they expected to run into a fucking poet with a gun was not one of them. A fucking poet!

"Sure!", she says brightly. "I was fourth-best in the course!" Something in Seyli's sceptical expression prompts her to add quietly, "...and we were more than four people, too."

[OOC: Oh, you think? And here I was trying to play the epitome of military competence.]

That startles a laugh out of them and then they actually offer her a faint smile. The first of the evening. "Well, you are here, after all." They're with holding their judgement, but maybe they can give a little. "I do appreciate people who know their way around a weapon, I'm Kese Seyli," they offer, finally introducing themselves.

Relieved that a bit of the tension seems to have left the other person (although she has no idea what's so funny), Mafyyil also decides to introduce herself. "My name is Zagfehan Mafyyil and I'm sure we're going to be great friends!" A bit of optimism has never hurt anyone, after all.

They aren't entirely sure where that name comes from, and aren't quite rude enough to comment to ask. "I"m sure," they say, blandly smiling at her. They really hope she's actually good with that gun, and are struggling trusting the strangers who brought them to this place.

"Actually", Mafyyil says, "I'd love to get some more weapon practice, but I think I've heard the firing range here is currently... otherwise occupied?" She'd really prefer gunnery practice to this party or whatever it is. Usually she likes parties but the levitating tentacled creatures that everyone here seems to regard as people slightly unnerve her. She's too polite to ask whether they are in any way biologically related to hexarchate people (who look human, but you never know).

"Yes, I've heard the same thing said as well." Seyli looks anything but pleased at this information. "But I'm not entirely sure who to ...speak with about the matter." Speak, not yell, they'd rather not start off on any wrong foot, but honestly what the hell was up with not having a place to practice?

"I'm not even sure who's making the decisions here", Mafyyil admits. Oh well - time to find out.

"HELL~LOOOOH!", she calls out cheerfully, at a volume that surely no one here could miss, no matter what they're drinking. (She herself has not dared to ask for a drink. Too questionable.) "I'd love to talk to someone in charge, please! High priest? Commander? Barbarian chieftainess or chieftain?" The last one just slipped out.

Ashari, at the bar, is in the middle of inventorying liqueurs. "Go find out what the foreigner wants," they suggest to Sasha. "Bring her over here, in fact--I'm dying to find out her opinion of Andan rose wine."
