Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~0900

Kaliyan (NPC) successfully guides the Wasp to the rift without complications or interference. She reports that the Rosemallow ship has veered away and chosen not to pursue or harass them further--at least in this timeline. The ship will be spending the next five to seven days in rift travel.

In the Rift:

Ashari orders everyone to catch up on sleep in shifts. After this has happened, they call a meeting that includes Sulen, Virmad, Sasha, Iawa, Alaric, and Mikodez [if [personal profile] pengwern is available], with Gerae (NPC) and Remi (NPC) as guests. The Wasp (NPC) may also venture opinions through Alaric and Sasha as interpreters. Kaliyan (NPC), Ankat (NPC), and Yehan (NPC) oversee the ship in case of emergency, but can be called via the ship's grid if anyone has questions for them specifically.

Tentative agenda as per this thread [Move 23]: (a) addressing problems in teamwork during the Station Moongray mission, (b) how to rectify those issues, and (c) next steps, including any recruitment.

[GM notes: Players are welcome to suggest plot hooks for what they'd like to explore in the next arc. Going after Quill? Rabble-rousing? Crashing the heptarchate's stock market?

Also, I'd really prefer the team leader to be a currently active PC rather than an NPC. If someone would like to volunteer their character for the job, I can move Ashari (NPC) to more of a background/support position, or maybe "shadowy boss who doesn't get involved in the day to day decision-making that much."

For recruitment, I still think the team would benefit from a couple of more fighty/meat shield type characters, and I'm thinking of opening up applications so we can recruit two more PCs. Thoughts on this are welcome, either IC or OOC. I'm personally not opposed to opening up mothlings as adoptable PCs, although they're not really meat shields yet...]

Aftermath of confrontation with the baby fox
Picking up from this thread:

Ashari (NPC) has finished overseeing the interrogation of Mikodez. Ashari tells Sulen, "Secure the fox kit so we can deal with him later. I'm sure you'll want to do some kind of follow-up with him without--" They gesture irritably at their eyes, which are no longer rose-blue. "Iawa, if you could make sure that the foxling is in stable condition, I'd appreciate it. Sometimes people have adverse emotional reactions coming out of enthrallment, if you know what I mean."

Once Mikodez is secured, Ashari will release enthrallment and ask Sasha to coordinate with Kaliyan (NPC) and make sure that no last-minute nasty cyberattacks come from Station Moongray or the Rosemallow ship during the getaway. Then Ashari will retire to their quarters to recover from the effort of enthrallment.

The disposition of a magistrate-thief
Picking up from this thread:
Gerae (NPC) responds to Virmad's expression of reassurance with a tremulous smile of relief. "It's not often that lower-ranking wolves are allowed to mingle with foreigners," he says. "Is he the only foreigner in your crew? It must make for some very exciting cultural interchanges."

Fluffy (NPC) decides that she wants to investigate Virmad and, if permitted, will attempt to hop onto his shoulder to sniff his neck.

Taking care of adorable baby mothlings
Alaric's order of unsedative has been produced by the medbay's pharmacopoeia unit and is ready for application to the poor baby mothlings. Remi (NPC) offers his assistance: "I want to make sure there's no permanent damage," he says. "Unfortunately, we don't have a great deal of data for their baseline."

Other
As aforementioned, Kaliyan (NPC) is piloting and ready to zoom the hell away from Station Moongray. Yehan (NPC) is on standby at comms. Ankat (NPC) is keeping an eye on Istradez (NPC), who appears to be in stable condition.

Confrontation with the baby fox
From this thread:
Sulen moves towards Mikodez, eyes gleaming the brassy color of clock gears. "I think it's time for some truth, Mikodez."

On the Wasp, Ashari (NPC) welcomes the arrival of Sulen, who threatens Mikodez with scrying after Mikodez is recalcitrant about answering Sasha's questions about why he didn't call for help for Istradez (NPC). Iawa is on standby in case Mikodez needs to be sedated again.

The disposition of a magistrate-thief
From this thread:
“‘Belong’ would be an overstatement,” Virmad says, concealing his amusement. “But yes, we did — I was just about to check on him [Gerae].”

He inclines his head to Sulen. “I’ll see you later; good luck with the foxling.”

Then, to Alaric: “Has Gerae had any food? I did tell him before I left that I’d make sure he got something to eat.”

"It looked like someone fed him, yes," Alaric replies, "although I don't know about Fluffy. Dragon snacks might make the conversation go smoother."

Alaric has just informed Virmad as to Gerae's status, and is about to hand Gerae over to Virmad's care. Meanwhile, Yehan (NPC) comes to talk to Alaric about mothling care: she reports that the station is having the remaining mothlings delivered to the Bumblebee and they are due any moment.

Confrontation at Administrator Nirai Paerani Shan's Office
Sulen and Virmad are facing off against Administrator Shan, having dumped a (friendly!) baby mothling (Crowned-With-Eyes) and faked evidence of Remi's "heresy" onto her desk, as per this thread from Move 19.

Shan makes a brief show of checking the faked datacube for the evidence, but she's clearly feeling pressured with two Rahal standing right there and it doesn't appear she finds anything out of order in the "evidence." "All right," Shan says. She pulls up an appropriate form on one of her data slates and signs over Remi and the mothlings to Sulen and Virmad's custody, then outputs it to a data cube and hands it to them. "Do you require assistance locating Nirai Remi? Or would you prefer to handle that yourselves?" Her expression is resigned.

On the "Bumblebee"

- Mikodez is in Sasha's bedroom, following this thread from Move 19. He is currently alone, trapped, and recuperating, apparently having dozed off.

- Sasha and Iawa have made preparations to talk to Mikodez (see above) as per this thread from Move 19. They have agreed to meet outside Sasha's bedroom and confront Mikodez together.

- Alaric is still currently closeted with Gerae (and Fluffy), continuing this thread from Move 19. Gerae looks abashed at Alaric's critique of heptarchate social control methods and says, "You're obviously very knowledgeable about us and our methods. Are you a scholar? I hadn't realized your team did research." (He's clearly fishing for more information about the Merry Crew he has fallen in with.) Meanwhile, Fluffy curls up on his forearm and appears to doze.

NPCs:
- Ashari is in their office.

- Kaliyan is still manning the cockpit in preparation for escape.

- Yehan graciously thanks Sasha for the box of Remy's journals and begins scanning them into the grid for further analysis; this is a process that can largely be automated so she has set the grid up to alert her if anything looks like it requires her immediate attention, and goes to get some more tea.

- Ankat is keeping an eye on Istradez, who is still woozy and concussed, as per this thread from Move 19. He is available if anyone needs an extra pair of hands.

EDITED ONE MORE TIME: the escape plan, for easy reference.

Move 20

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~05:75

Just outside of Medical
The mothling Crowned-with-Eyes is continuing to purr rapturously from within Mikodez's pack, which is in Alaric's possession. Fluffy has finally piped down--maybe napping, who knows what her sleep cycles are? Mikodez is currently under Alaric's watch (so to speak). [The GM strongly suggests that players cooperate to keep Mikodez from escaping yet again as I'd like to get y'all off this station! *g* ]

Sulen gets to check their lokwor, which contains an updated message from Ashari reiterating that everyone should return to the Wasp ASAP. Ashari adds, rather ominously, that they authorize Sulen to "use any necessary force" to round up crew members; they would like Sulen and Virmad to contact the administrator from the Wasp once the two of them are on the moth again.

A thoroughly exasperated-looking male nurse (the one Alaric spoke to earlier) wheels Istradez (NPC) out on a float chair, accompanied by Iawa, whom the nurse has entrusted with further instructions for Istradez's care. Istradez looks like he's seen better days, and Iawa notices that his mind seems to be wandering again--a lingering concussion effect? It's too bad that the nurse seems thoroughly determined to get rid of them all and heads back into Medical at the first opportunity.

Sasha, accompanied by Ankat (NPC), can meet our merry adventurers just outside Medical, if she likes.

"Bumblebee" status
Kaliyan (NPC) is manning the cockpit. Ashari (NPC) has left the office [edit, continuity, sorry about that]. Yehan (NPC) is currently manning comms as well. The Wasp itself is currently quiescent, no doubt chewing away on magic squares (which Sasha gave it to think about in Move 19). Gerae is contained (for the moment) in his makeshift cell; video surveillance will reveal that he is slowly drinking his Space Nescafe, making everything last and looking as if it's the best coffee he's ever had.

After giving orders to crew members on the station, Ashari seeks out Virmad in the galley and tells him that they expect him and Sulen to prepare to call the administrator on the station so they can get the hell out of here as per the plan as soon as Sulen and the rest of the crew is back. Ashari suggests that Virmad draft the communication for Sulen's approval and adds, "Did you find out anything useful from Teo? Don't be shy, darling, every little bit helps."

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~0550

Just outside of Medical

Sulen has just been abandoned by Mikodez, who has headed into the reception area of Medical. They can hear Fluffy chirruping now that she's finished gobbling down the treats that Mikodez has fed her. Would it be best to go after Mikodez and try to contain the damage, or stand guard outside with the voidcreature? Baby Crowned-With-Eyes is wriggling very alarmingly in the sack and making ridiculously cheerful humming noises--and the spilled coffee still hasn't been cleaned up, and is probably a slipping hazard.

In Medical: antechamber

A triage nurse gives Mikodez a distinctly unfriendly look as he approaches with a caged Fluffy in tow. "You've had enough warnings," he says. "I don't care if you're Andan Bokali's special guests, you're disturbing our legitimate patients." He reaches over to a desk and pushes a red call button marked SECURITY.

In Medical: the actual patient

Istradez is, despite being awfully cavalier about his own condition, smiling reluctantly at Iawa for their solicitousness. Meanwhile, although Alaric has instructed Mikodez to fetch a nurse with float chair and discharge paperwork, he hears the triage nurse shooing Mikodez out. If they want a float chair, they're going to have to wrangle on themselves; it's clear that relying on Mikodez is not...the best idea considering how annoyed Medical is with him.

[Assuming that Alaric has called the "Bumblebee," Ashari (running as NPC) responds via lokwor.]

Ashari sounds very concerned about Istradez's status. "Bad enough to need a float chair? I'll dispatch one of the Kel to prep Medical," they tell Alaric.

on the "Bumblebee": the thieving Rahal

Gerae, taking Virmad's silence as a license to spill all his emotional upsets, will continue babbling about what a stressful year he's had unless Virmad interrupts him. If Virmad doesn't bring up the topic himself, Gerae will add plaintively that he could use some coffee (or stronger stimulant) and that he hasn't had food for a full day and could they get an early breakfast?

on the "Bumblebee": "xeno"mathematics the Cartesian way

The moth ponders Sasha's symbols and graphs for several minutes, then returns a graph with y = log10x, y = x, y = x2, and y = 10x. Its humming has definitely quieted--perhaps the math is distracting it, or is taking more of its concentration.

[It's too bad I don't remember any LaTeX...?!]

Comms to EVERYONE, marching orders from Ashari

Ashari (running as NPC) calls everyone via lokwor, sounding grim, and instructs that they would like everyone to be on the "Bumblebee" and prepared to make a run for it within the hour. This means that Ashari expects Sulen and Virmad to prepare for a (remote) confrontation with the station administrator as per the plan.

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~0515

Iawa is with Istradez in Medical. The chart indicates that Istradez (CORRECTION: "Imsayed") has mild concussion that is apparently aggravating a pre-existing head injury. Istradez moans, then his eyes open. He blinks blearily before focusing on Iawa. "This isn't the ship," he says intelligently, sounding hazy.

Next thing Iawa knows, Istradez seems to come fully alert and attempts to sit up too quickly. "My brother--!" He seems apt to scramble out of bed and after Mikodez unless prevented.

Mikodez, just outside Medical, is bearing both Fluffy the Vraselian pseudo-dragon and Crowned With Eyes (CWE for short) the newly hatched mothling. He is being confronted by Alaric, who brought four caffeinated drinks, one additionally dosed with a sleeping drug, and who is hinting strongly to Mikodez that CWE needs to be united with the adult moth on the Bumblebee. Sulen has, by chance, grabbed the sleeping-drug-enabled drink, and was not prepared for Alaric also showing up to deal with Mikodez--a command-and-control snafu, apparently; Sulen has not yet drunk the drugged beverage, although it's not clear that they have understood Alaric's attempts to warn them from doing so.

The last response in that thread, an exchange between Mikodez and Alaric:
"I know, right? I had no idea that the term was so literal either until it started chatting," Alaric said, happy both that Mikodez was being distracted and that someone else was actually enthusiastic about this. "I'm not sure exactly what it looks like because it's in its own compartment and we're communicating over a primitive text interface, but it does seem friendly enough. Mostly it wants to bring Remi's baby moths with it when we leave, and fortunately Remi wants to bring them too. So, one the one hand it's yet another bit of terrible behavior by the authorities, but on the other an exciting scientific opportunity."

Just on cue, CWE the mothling hums happily and launches itself out of the pack, followed by an angrily whistling Fluffy, who seems to think the mothling is escaping property.

Virmad has received permission from Ashari to check on Gerae. The camera has revealed that Gerae is agitated and pacing the room. He does not appear to have any weapons, although given his talent for legerdemain, this is not an absolute certainty. If Virmad enters, Gerae will prostrate himself in a frankly embarrassing fashion and beg for an update on Fluffy's status, and oh by the way is Virmad's leader Ashari really going to slit Gerae's throat and leave him for the fishes?

Sasha overhears Gerae's plaints as she makes it to environmental. Her first inspection reveals that the filters are, indeed, poorly seated. Judging from the cruft around them, they were probably messed up even before Alaric and Remi started banging around the Bumblebee making modifications. While she's busy with that, Yehan [running as NPC] messages her and says that she's done with her meeting with Ashari and is now overseeing comms.

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~05:00

Mikodez finds himself treed by Alaric (bearing "sleep aids") in the corridor outside Medical. In whatever confrontation happens, the much-adorned mothling known (among other things) as Crowned-with-Eyes (henceforth CWE) wriggles free of the Andan cloth and flutters straight into one of the nearest examination rooms, humming joyously. Several medics can be heard exclaiming in fear and/or annoyance at the intruder. One of them squeaks, "Is that another of Magistrate Gerae's pets?"

(...pets?)

Alaric, EDIT: Iawa, and Sulen can take advantage of the distraction to get by Mikodez and into Medical. The triage nurse will recognize them as the recent visitors and direct them toward a pallet where "Imsayed" (Istradez) is lying; he is apparently now sleeping rather than knocked out, but has yet to wake from his ordeal.

Sasha is in the midst of oxygen recycler diagnostics and reading through the maintenance logs. Around this time, Yehan (running as NPC), who has actually gotten some sleep, stops in and asks if Sasha could use some breakfast and/or assistance.

Ashari is enjoying a restful sleep in preparation for what's to come. They can, if they choose to get up early, check in on the others, or determine what to do with Gerae of the mysteriously weaponizable lockpicks. [NOTE: If [personal profile] smokedetective doesn't respond to this move, I'm going to put Ashari on inactive status and run as NPC as necessary to move forward.] Virmad is a likely candidate to either volunteer or be asked to look in on Gerae. Among other things, Gerae is still awake and is (if anyone checks on him, whether through camera surveillance or by persuading Sasha to open the room) scratching messages onto the wall with a stylus that was left in the room.

Assumptions, just to get everyone more or less on the same time track again:

- Mikodez ignored messages from the other PCs for a couple hours while he collected a DNA sample from unconscious!Istradez, screwed around with his gun, and entertained baby Crowned-with-Eyes the mothling and Fluffy the Vraselian pseudo-dragon. The notebooks that Mikodez abstracted from Remi's lab appear to be a Space Bullet Journal about life on a war-torn technologically backwards planet. [The heptarchate is evil, but as long as you're not a heretic, the standard of living is actually quite high, with good social/medical services &c.]

Also, at some point Mikodez will have noticed that someone (Sasha) has cut off his access from the lokwor into the station grid.

At 4:50, Mikodez runs into Vana looking for Remi at the bubble tea shop. We can pick up from there. As per [personal profile] zuhrovet's suggestion, I advise that Mikodez is looking for Remi in order to get much-needed information on mothling care, although it may occur to him that he can possibly wheedle that info out of Vana as well.

- After the meeting between Sasha, Sulen, Virmad, and Ashari:

I presume that Sulen has either gone off to practice with the airgun in the interim (or lied to Sasha that they were going to, to get her off their back; your choice!). How good is Sulen with firearms? Ankat (running as NPC) will volunteer to show Sulen the basics, largely out of Kel paranoia that someone is going to screw up Gun 101.

Around 4:00, Teo has messaged Virmad saying that a Safety worker has discovered Istradez (running as NPC) in one of the guest rooms. He says that Istradez has been given first aid but do they want to send someone from the Bumblebee to retrieve him, or will they authorize sending Istradez to Station Medical? If Vass wants, they could go to Istradez and perhaps supervise any additional care that the medics give him.

Sasha will have overheard this presumably. In the intervening hours, it appears that the owner of the wriggly virus suspects that it has been detected. It has gone quiescent and/or deleted most traces of itself, presumably in the hopes of lying low until Sasha's suspicions die down.

Kaliyan (running as NPC) shows up in the newly made mothling bay to inform Alaric that she thinks that the modifications to the ship have screwed up something in life support--not critical now while they're docked at a space station, but kind a problem later.

Ashari, investigating Gerae's lockpicks more closely in some spare moment (maybe because they're having trouble sleeping?), discovers that some of them include hidden poison needle units. This isn't just a matter of a hobby of picking pockets, Gerae was prepared for Serious Business.

"I have no idea what would happen if you fouled up the stock market," Istradez says. His eyes are starting to look glassy. "And I'm just as married to the fucking job as you are." He gives forth a sigh and appears to be dropping into semi-slumber when Mikodez's last words penetrate. "We need you as hexarch. Just...maybe less of a psychopathic one? But you don't know about that 'training incident,' either..."

Hmm. Istradez's pulse is becoming too slow for comfort. Better do something about that.

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen, ass o' clock Monday

on the Bumblebee/Wasp/Monthra

around 1:00, in the hold of the Wasp

Remi and Alaric have made excellent progress on the conversion of the "Bumblebee"'s hold space into a mothling habitat. Remi has lapsed into a brooding silence, considering Alaric's revelations about what life is like outside of the heptarchate. At this point, however, the moth starts to hum again. It doesn't seem to want to shut up, but at least its humming is quieter--maybe the station hasn't noticed.

Remi looks interested. "Your moth is very talkative--is that usual?" His expression turns sad. "They never talked much in captivity with us. I suppose it's understandable."

around Monday 2:50

Gerae asks Ashari and Sasha, "Should I go back into my room now? I promise I'll stay out of the way. And you have all my lockpicks, so it's not like I can finagle my way out." He glances sidelong at Virmad and Sulen, then adds, "Fluffy especially likes cookies, but she shouldn't have too many of them. She also likes honey-dipped locusts, if you can get any. Some of the food vendors on the station carry them sometimes, but I have to request them special, and they confiscated my supply."

Mikodez and Istradez [NPC] on Moongray Station, confronting a HATCHED EGG, ca. 20:25

[Continuing from this comment by [personal profile] pengwern.]

Istradez [NPC] fumbles for a moment with the explosive, then swears. "The hell, Miki, are you screwing around with passcodes again?"

The hatched mothling continues its soprano hum as it now starts to circle in the air before Mikodez and Istradez, in apparent distress. Then the humming intensifies, and it launches itself at Mikodez with a series of high-pitched squeals, almost like a puppy. Istradez advances; the mothling attempts to hide behind Mikodez, as if beseeching his protection.

Remi works companionably with Alaric in order to provide the mothlings with a suitable environment. Midway through the work, he asks hesitantly, "I noticed that you speak of the heptarchate as--as a visitor. Might I ask, if it's not impudent, what it's like outside the heptarchate? Is it--better?"

around Monday 1:75

[GM FIAT: I'm making a maintenance move for Kaliyan and Ankat. For the nonce, we'll say Yehan appears to be holed up in her cabin and has sent a DON'T BOTHER ME note to anyone who asks her to emerge. Kaliyan, Ankat, and Yehan are currently inactive.]

Ankat, having heard that Iawa is the one to go to for any medical issues, shows up and asks for painkillers for himself and Kaliyan. If pressed, he will explain that they're both suffering migraine-level headaches and muscle aches, a known side-effect of outprocessing/formation break in former Kel. He adds that he would really prefer not to trouble Ashari with such a minor problem, but it's obvious to Iawa that both Kel are going to be out of action for a while, and that could be anything but "minor."

It's up to Ashari whether they catch wind of this if Iawa doesn't outright tell them, and what, if anything, they want to do about it, considering the general chaos going on tonight.

around Monday 2:10

[continuing Ashari, Sasha, Sulen, and Virmad debating Quill and freeing the moths]

"Excuse me," a diffident voice says during a lull in the conversation. Gerae, looking rather the worse for wear, has poked his head around the corner. "I couldn't help overhearing--your ship is a living animal? Like Fluffy?" At the stares/glares/??? in reaction, he sheepishly holds up a small device. "You forgot to relieve me of my lockpicks. One of my first cases involved a thief, and she taught me picking locks during the interrogation, I think in the hopes that I'd show her special consideration during sentencing. You forgot to search me when you brought me here...anyway, are the moths friendly? Fluffy's very friendly, you know."

Mikodez, on Moongray Station, pondering an egg

[Follow-up to this thread.]

It's easy enough for Mikodez to switch the motion detector off; it's not really designed for security use, so the researchers in the lab have it set up so it's easy to take offline for maintenance, etc. (It's highly doubtful they figured the egg would know how to hit the off switch.)

There is no one snoring under the desk, but there is a small file box containing a few paper notebooks, the old-fashioned kind. The game's soothing purring continues.

If Mikodez wants to set up the matter printer for a fake egg and one or two guns, that's easy enough. It might take some extra time to make sure the egg doesn't come out attractively plaid, though.

After Sasha and Ashari's fight/cultural misunderstanding, and Ashari and Sulen clean up afterward, Gerae's distress becomes increasingly evident. He's pounding on the door of the room that Sulen deposited him in, crying in an increasingly hoarse voice that he refuses to leave without Fluffy.

[[personal profile] lleullawgyffes, it's up to you whether Virmad pays any attention to Sasha's presumed discreet lokwor message and returns in time to help talk to Gerae, or whether Virmad decides to ignore it in favor of continued shenanigans with Teo.]

Sasha appears to be in good health; Iawa might or might not want to write this up formally for Ashari or Ashari's superiors, depending on their assessment of Ashari's mood. [Iawa is the de facto medic as far as I can tell!]

Remi is asking Alaric if it would be difficult to set up a radio to soothe the mothlings into docility, which is less invasive than sedating them.

Meanwhile, Mothra is making rumbly noises again. It sends another Space ASCII diagram, this time of mothlings playing hide and seek.

"I admit I've never given much thought to form in literature--I'm afraid Kel Academy only throws enough high language at us in the form of 'how to write a good post battle report' and isn't really high on literary value. I'll have to look up those poems you mentioned sometime."

[slime mold racing:] "If you hang around long enough," Teo says, "I'd be happy to take you to a slime mold race. There are recordings, but, ah, I feel that the sport is best appreciated live. The Nirai who are into it get very into it."

[dramas:] "Excellent!" Teo says. "Whenever you're in the mood"--his mouth quirks in a smile--"we can head on over."

[[personal profile] lleullawgyffes, your call as to whether you want to fade to black at whatever point you deem fitting, or RP Virmad/Teo more explicitly. If the latter, I can start a locked post for the RP. Let me know!]

Mikodez, on Moongray Station, sniffing around for clues
[in response to this thread from Move 11]

The "racing" records are surprisingly well-defended. A little nosing about on some of the local forums and discussion boards suggests it has to do with the breeding of lineages of speedy space slime molds for the local sport of slime mold racing. Apparently some of the slime mold lineages are particularly valuable. Or it could be a cover for something else, who knows? Nirai are weird.

As for his other efforts, Mikodez comes up with some public information on Andan Bokali. Bokali has a rather bland record of service in several different marches. Mikodez's intuition tells him that there's something being hidden from him. Bokali's record is too bland, perfectly in line with what you'd expect for a second-class contact specialist of no particular repute. That seems weird--why would you trust the heptarchate's safety to a middling contact specialist? Does Bokali have extra qualifications only available to those with a higher security clearance?

Year 361, Month Three, Day Sixteen (Sunday), overnight

on the Bumblebee/Wasp/Mothra

Sasha has no trouble cleaning up after herself. She receives a couple halfhearted probes from the wriggly virus trying to worm its way in again, though.

Alaric will need to help Ankat and Kaliyan refit the firing range into a mothling habitat--they can do the construction work, especially with the help of the matter printer [handwave], but they want guidance with the radiation shielding--best not to mess that up. Remi will assist with that for the first part of the night; he seems to have a pretty solid practical background in engineering.

Gerae will be knocking on the door plaintively asking if he can talk to someone, and promising that he will behave. In particular, he wants to know that since he's escaping with the lot of you, can he bring Fluffy with?

Toward 2 a.m. or so, unless something requires his attention, Remi will head back onto the station, avoiding Vana so that she can't corner him.

[If you want to make any other preparations before the escape attempt/confrontation proper on Day 17 in the morning, this is the move to do it.]

Station Moongray

On the Station, at The Bar on Level Three: Virmad

[[personal profile] lleullawgyffes, it's up to you whether you want to say that Virmad gets caught up with Teo and/or matters on station overnight, or whether he will take care of matters with Teo quickly enough to join the others at the "Bumblebee" below.]

Per this thread, Teo has just greeted Virmad in the bar. To recap for your convenience:
The Bar on Level Three really is on Level Three. There are helpful directories pointing the way, but the fact that a number of people are heading there, and the cheerful clamor of people talking, and music, would have made it easy to find regardless.

The bartender is a trim woman with her hair hanging about her face in fantastic coils; the combs and hairpins look like they're about to escape. She's pouring a drink for a slouching Nirai technician when Virmad arrives. "You're new here," she says. "What can I get you?"

Kel Teo is sitting at a seat where he has a clear view of all exits. (Very Kel.) He's had a chance to change out of his uniform; he's wearing a sleek suit in shades of deep brown, and he's also embellished himself with gold-and-amber jewelry. He waves when he spots Virmad, smiling.

Teo adds that he's happy to pay for Virmad's drink--the first one, anyway, and some of the local grub. "I recommend the fried pork fritters with barbecue sauce," Teo says, "But maybe that's not ascetic enough fare for a Rahal?" (He's teasing.)

On the Station, on the "Bumblebee": Sulen, Sasha, Iawa, Alaric
Also probably: Ashari?, Mikodez?

Recap:
Remi has explained, at Sasha's insistence, that the baby moths were hatched in captivity from eggs stolen from the parents by a heptarchate expedition, and that the parents are likely dead. He claims that this all happened before he himself arrived on the station, and that he's been advocating for humane treatment of the baby moths.

Alaric has just explained that he discovered the Wasp's "moth" is a sentient starfaring being and has been communicating with it using pictures [Move 10].

Moving on:
Remi's response to this is to stare at Alaric in horror. "Do you seriously want me to believe that you were using a living being as your spaceship and didn't even check for sapience? I thought that was basic protocol...unless," and his expression sours, "it was convenient for people to hush it up?" He stares at Alaric. "Well, I can't blame it for wanting to adopt the young of its kind, but that's a high-security enclosure..."

[Remi might well be responsive to helping them kidnap the baby moths, assuming the whole conversation doesn't blow up in a completely different direction, but he's not going to offer unless someone else brings it up. There's plenty of opportunity for people to opine on what should be done about the baby moths, whether Alaric has been behaving appropriately, who Sasha should have notified, etc. If you need help brainstorming on your action, please let me know and I'll get back to you when I can; others players might also have thoughts.]

[GM suggests that Ashari and Mikodez could either have returned to the ship for the meeting with Remi, or else could teleconference in.

[personal profile] smokedetective: Ashari probably wants to be present in some form for the discussion, not least for possible/likely pending confrontation with Sasha per [personal profile] zuhrovet's notes. If teleconferencing, Istradez will be happy to cover for them with any pesky people.

[personal profile] pengwern: If Mikodez prefers not to be involved in this discussion, he could plausibly be investigating the nonresponsiveness of the Kel at the moment after they helped Sulen stow Gerae, or assigned to keep an eye on Gerae, who might be feeling confessional while everyone else is occupied.]

DAY SIXTEEN (SUNDAY), EVENING

On the station, Nirai Alissa's dance studio
Artist-designate Kwor stares defiantly at Ashari. He must know that it's always a risk challenging someone who might be a genuine Andan, but on the other hand, he's probably used to being a very large fish in a very small pool.

"Kwor," Alissa says, trying to defuse the situation, "why don't you show our guest around? They're looking to set up an art installation that I think many of the stationers will find interesting."

On the station, Rahal Gerae's office
Rahal Gerae can barely keep himself from fidgeting as Sulen and Virmad go through his records and personal effects. Fluffy is busy preening.

"She's long gone, you know," he says, referring to the niece whom he helped smuggle out of the heptarchate after she turned heretic. The confessional urge takes guilty people like this sometimes, and apparently even a Rahal (albeit a corrupt one) isn't immune. "Do what you want to me. I saved her and that's all that matters."

On the station, at the "Bumblebee"
The security feed shows anyone who is watching that Nirai Remi has come with a suspiciously hefty briefcase. Any sort of scan will reveal that it contains a couple changes of clothing and some old-timey Space USB Sticks. He's beautifully groomed and moves like a dancer; but it's also evident from his expression that he's really pissed off about something.

Meanwhile, the Wasp asks again via Space ASCII Art, rather plaintively, if flying away with the baby mothlings is a thing that could happen. It continues vibrating and humming to itself.

An inquiry comes in from the station, probably in response to the Wasp's behavior, if there is some technical difficulty that the Wasp's crew needs help with. The station offers to send some spare engineers to look at the "Bumblebee."

DAY SEVENTEEN, MONDAY (MORNING)

On the station, bubble tea stand

Vana seems distraught that she can't find Remi at the bubble tea stand. The barista has this "I can't wait until my shift is over" expression, between dealing with an anxious Nirai grad student and an unauthorized teenager.

Vana's eye falls on Mikodez. "Are you one of the visitors?" she says with a frown. "I don't suppose you've seen a tall man with curly brown hair, lavender eyes?" She casts a glare at the barista for being so unhelpful.

On the station's carapace
The ammunition drone reports to whoever is listening that it has not exactly caught a spacegoing slime mold; rather, the slime mold has clogged up its legs and it's clinging rather precariously to the station's carapace. It is requesting, as forlornly as a nonsentient drone can, that somebody repair it. Until someone does something, it's...stuck.

On the station, during Mikodez and Iawa's science tour
Pavn, having noted Iawa's interest in the question of sonciousness, adds, "If you like, the researcher is probably busy at this hour, and he's in one of the classified labs, but I think that research assistant is currently off-shift. I could introduce you to her, if you like. She's always happy to talk about philosophical questions."

On the station, during Sasha, Yehan, and Alaric's science tour
Pavn looks quizzically at Yehan during the tour. "You remind me of some of the other visitors we've had recently," he says, in a friendly enough fashion. "You may have caught sight of their ship on the way in. Granted, phenotypes can be so misleading. Where did you say you were from?"

On the station, visitor's lounge, later
Sasha and Alaric are debating over carbon-fiber sculpture aesthetics when a ping comes in from the lokwor to indicate that Sasha's program has picked up more information on Remi. [Edit: sorry, hit post too soon.] He's not in his lab, but has signed out a spacesuit and has apparently gone for a walk outside the station. The lokwor has no idea why--it wasn't able to ferret out that information without Sasha's hacking guidance.

On the station, Rahal Gerae's office
Armed with an extra slate containing information about Rahal Gerae's known black market dealings, Sulen and Virmad head to Rahal Gerae's office. [Feel free to insert any preparations you may have wanted to make beforehand in a thread of its own.] The door is neatly labeled in a peculiarly Rahal style of calligraphy, recognizable despite the drift of time. There is a potted plant outside the door, its elongated flowers wilting.

More problematically, the door isn't locked. It appears to be stuck halfway open.

On the station, Nirai Alissa's dance studio
Before Ashari can say anything one way or the other to Alissa, a short man, dark-skinned, their shaven head covered with gold mesh-tattoos, stomps out of the office. He glares at Ashari. "I always knew you would be sucking up to any 'artists' who showed up on the station," he says. "Excuse me. I'm artist-designate Kwor, and I simply must demand that you authenticate yourself."

Alissa closes her eyes and looks pained. "Ah, yes," she says, "our resident artist-designate..." She leaves it at that.

[An artist-designate is basically the station's arts & entertainment coordinator, and in particular it means that Kwor is not an Andan but sort of secondary artist hired through the Andan, because a real Andan couldn't be arsed to come out to this posting.]

[Also note that Istradez is lurking in the background in this scene, if you need to borrow him.]

On the station, bubble tea stand 4:30 Monday morning
The bubble tea cafe is already open, or maybe always open, based on its sign. Mikodez and anyone else who decides to come here will notice several people sipping their bubble tea or coffee in a small area with seats and tables and decorative floating lanterns. There are many flavor shots offered, from mango to orange creme to root beer.

The barista frowns when she sees Mikodez. "Excuse me," she says. "Where are your parents?"

[GM's note: per [personal profile] zuhrovet's information-gathering, Remi always visits the same bar, call it the Crooked Gear, on Tuesday evenings, and picks up a drink at a cafe specializing in bubble tea every morning before going in to work.]

[Also, if there's something you want to find at the station, feel free to suggest it! I already have plans for the suggested rival artist NPC.]

The Wasp
Is Kaliyan remaining on board the Wasp? If so, she (and anyone else still aboard) notices an occasional unusual humming, as though the moth is powering itself back up. Mothdrives are subject to quirks, but this one is supposed to be powered down while docked.

Alaric has discovered a way to communicate with the moth and to disable its harness (the harness is what controls the sentient-beastie component of the moth). He has not yet informed the rest of the team of this.

Meanwhile, between Alaric, Sasha, and Ankat, they've manufactured a couple of nonsentient drones to "repair" the ship and crawl about its surface. Station Moongray has taken no particular notice of them, so a few more drones, these manufactured to mimic those of Moongray's collection, have been inserted into the population and seem to have been accepted as "authentic." At a convenient time, the drones report back to the grid, including maps of the "secure" areas. The system pings Sasha's lokwor in some suitably coded fashion to let her know the information's available.

Station Moongray Welcoming Committee

Lieutenant Kel Teo is brisk about checking everyone for harmful biologicals or volatile objects. He lingers a little--just a little--when he gets to Virmad. "Everything looks fine," he says. "But I'm sure your journey has been tiring and you'd like to relax. If you want recommendations for the few decent bars on this station, I have a few."

When Teo comes to Sasha's 3D printer, he brings out a completely different scanner and makes sure that it's not going to blow up. He admires it on a purely technical level and says wistfully that he wouldn't mind more time to play with such things himself. "Of course," he says to Sasha, "if this had been a bomb I'd already be roast chicken." He doesn't seem terribly bothered by the possibility, or, for the matter, by the weakness of his Kel joke.

Everyone is given a visitor's pass, which can be worn on a lanyard (provided) or kept in a pocket. It includes limited access to the station grid and some of the entertainments on file (think Cheris's cheesy dramas). Teo also gives directions to visitor's quarters (ample space for everyone to have a room of their own, basic furnishings provided) if anyone would rather sleep on the station rather than back on the Wasp.

Once everyone has been cleared, Station Administrator Paerani Shan goes over some of the basics from the Welcome Packet, which informs them which areas are off-limits, the location of Medical in case of allergic reaction or the sniffles, always follow the instructions of safety workers with their orange armbands, e.g. in case of depressurization or chemical spill or other accident. Frankly, it's kind of an eyeglazing lecture, undoubtedly required by regulations, although she does her best with it.

Afterwards, while people are sorting themselves out, Shan asks to speak to "Rahal Dar Chresh" (Sulen) and "Rahal Virmad" (Virmad) for help with an "internal matter."

Andan Bokali smiles at "Andan Rii" (Ashari) and their assistants. "I can take you to Nirai Alissa right now, if you like, to talk about your performance space requirements. She should be in the studio right now."

Nirai Pavn invites anyone who looks at loose ends to come join him for a tour of some of their observation equipment and laboratories. If anyone looks sincerely interested in "science," he will be really, really pleased.

The Wasp
The Wasp is securely docked under Kaliyan's guidance in one of Moongray's bays--pretty roomy, but Moongray must be used to receiving shipments of raw materials for any fabrication, plus any specialty equipment they can't make or replace with what they have on-station.

In response to Alaric's last communication with the Wasp [Move 6], it responds with a box containing the Wasp, a bag-of-water human figure, and the Rebellion's logo and a "1." Then it pauses and sends two juxtaposed illustrations, one of a moth inside a box with a specifically Nirai voidmoth logo, and one of three moths outside the box.

The welcome on-station
When anyone who's coming on-station emerges, Andan Bokali and Nirai Pavn lead the way.

The group is greeted by Station Administrator Nirai Paerani Shan--who watches them from behind a translucent partition. Shan is a short, stumpy woman whose every inch of visible skin is covered with tattoos and/or implants. The lenses covering her eyes combined with the colorful, shimmering shawl she's wearing makes her resemble a butterfly. "So what's this I hear about trade goods?" she says through an intercom system that distorts her voice.

A rather harried looking group of security workers appears at another door that is blocked by yet another translucent partition. Interestingly (and this was not mentioned in the briefing materials), their leader appears to be a broad, muscular lieutenant seconded from the Kel--the Nirai uniform looks like it only barely fits him, and the golden Kel ashhawk at his breast gleams in the lights of the docking bay.

"Before we start negotiating," the lieutenant says after an inscrutable look in Shan's direction, as if he's used to her jumping the gun (so to speak), "I will have to ask you all to submit to a security and medical scan, for everyone's safety. It might tickle if you have any implants." He holds up a handheld scanner.

Bokali looks bemused. "I always do love being the guinea pig for any bored diseases, but I don't even feel so much as a sniffle coming on."

The Wasp's cockpit/command center
The Naxorian Rosemallow ship continues to hold position. Kaliyan notices it's now scanning the Wasp with some primitive [handwave] scan technology, focusing especially on the mothdrive.

The Wasp's Engineering room
Presuming a short interval of time has passed while Alaric consults as to moths' feelings about the hexarchate, the Wasp's moth repeats its query: the six hexarchate emblems in space ASCII, followed by the "1 / 0" for "???" Then after another short pause, it adds the Liozh emblem, followed by "1 / 0" for "???"

Meanwhile, Sasha's luck and guesswork regarding the Naxarat ship's encryption bear fruit. It appears that the Naxorians are discussing navigational difficulties. They've been trying to get information out of the Nirai station so they can find their way back home, but the Nirai are being closemouthed about what they've discovered about the rifts so far. There's also a brief mention of personnel shortages.

The Wasp's airlock, welcoming party
Andan Bokali still hasn't touched any of the edible fidget spinners, although Pavn is munching away on a third. "If you're ready, we'd like to invite you back to Station Moongray. Rii, you and your assistants"--Bokali's eyes flicker as they try to figure out just which people are "assistants"--"can see the space we have available for artistic displays, and as for the rest of you, surely we can offer you the conveniences of station while you dock with us. Honored inquisitors, I'm sure our station administrator would like to meet you as soon as convenient."

Bokali coughs delicately, then adds, with a glance at Ankat for being the only one in the airlock with a remotely military bearing, "The station will insist that all firearms be left behind."

[The GM would like to note in Ankat's direction that a calendrical sword is sufficiently future-tech that it probably will only show up as "weird device" on Moongray's scanners, not as "lightsabre-alike weapon."]

[Tentatively, I'd like to get y'all onto the station next turn (Move 7) unless something happens to cause y'all to abort. :p ]

The Wasp's cockpit/command center:
Kaliyan notes that the Butterfly Lens asks for a docking maneuver with the Wasp, and approaches slowly and politely on the assumption that this is approved. In the meantime, the second vessel, which Sasha and Yehan previously identified as some kind of Naxorian Rosemallow House starship, decelerates and holds position some distance from the Wasp, lingering without initiating communication.

The Wasp's Engineering room
Anyone in or near Engineering will notice what almost feels like a quaver from the Wasp at the second starship's approach, as though the Wasp is nervous.

[Skipping ahead a bit with the logistics--feel free to add any other preparations that the team would have made before the meeting proper.]

The Wasp's airlock, welcoming party
The ship-to-ship docking maneuver goes more or less smoothly--partly due to Kaliyan's vigilance, partly due to adroit piloting on the Butterfly's end. Two individuals emerge from the other ship. The first is a tall alt with long, rippling hair, their eyes wide and anxious. The alt is not wearing Nirai colors, but instead wears shades of desaturated blue with a blue-and-silver pin that declares that they are a Contact Specialist, Second Class. Their companion appears to be the alt's assistant, a tidy older man with his hair in braids, all wrapped up in a black coat with silver buttons, as if he's used to warmer temperatures. Neither of them resembles Nirai Remi.

Ankat doesn't spot any obvious weapons--it looks like the man could be hiding something beneath his coat, but he'd probably have difficulty getting it out before Ankat could react or call a warning. Probably.

"Ah, snacks!" the alt says, looking sharply at the edible fidget spinners. "You must be from one of those timelines, where the Liozh--" They flutter their hands. "You know."

"Manners, Contact Specialist," the man in the coat says. "You mustn't insult their way of living. We have special dispensation about...alternate orthodoxies, remember?"

"Indeed," the alt says. They will address themselves to the welcoming party in general, although it's clear that they're trying to identify Andan Rii. (As a Contact Specialist, they've probably learned not to make too many hasty assumptions.) "I'm Contact Specialist Andan Bokali, Second Class, and the Nirai have given me the honor of welcoming you and the rest of Bumblebee's crew to Station Moongray. [Referencing this message from Move 4.] This gentle here is my liaison on the station, Nirai Pavn." They smile, eyeing the fidget spinners again as though they suspect some of them are rigged to blow. "It is very good of you to provide refreshments. We were going to feed you back at the station, you know, but--" Andan Bokali smiles wryly. "The cooking there is not always the most festive." Their gaze drifts to Ankat's Scadrian whiskey, and their eyes brighten.

[Feel free to introduce yourselves to the NPCs, mingle with them, discuss terrible space snacks, ask them about the other ship, etc.]
