Character Application: Kese Seyli

Character name: Kese Seyli
One-paragraph (100 words) summary of your character.
An ex-kel crashhawk and grunt, now a mercenary on the edges of the Hexarchate. With no options for a better life on planet, pragmatic Seyli enlisted, embracing the fact that they could at any time be sacrificed. It offered a more interesting life than running the family foodcart. Seyli is hardworking, but isn't particularly academic. They're not fond of Shuos games as their mind struggles to processes the complicated steps (they'd have never been a strategist or tactician). Physically, they're stocky/muscular with unremarkable features and shaggy black hair. They modded and present as an alt after deserting the Kel.
===
How did your character first learn of the hexarchate?
Born into it, from a family who had no fraction service prior to them joining the Kel when they (just barely) passed the entrance exams. Their homeworld, family, and life before the Kel was unremarkable.
Why did your character join this rebellion?
Recruited into it after ending up in a rift, showing up at the right time and the right place. They deserted the Kel during General Kel Vrae Tala's failed Fire Grasses campaign and have no love for the empire who so easily fucks with their people. TL:DR: Why not? They need something to punch.
What type of role would your character play in a mission?
Seyli is a hitter and is happy to follow the orders of a team leader when they need someone to go in guns blazing or fists out. In absence of a leader, they'll follow group will...unless they seriously disagree with the choices.
What kinds of missions would your character like to see?
Seyli follows (reasonable) orders well, and would be happy to be on guard duty or scouting missions where they need someone who is a good shot or a steady hand. They don't believe romance is something that would ever happen to them, but they aren't uninterested in it. They would be hilariously terrible at diplomacy, and would have to be carefully guided in intrigue, but would do what they were set to the best they could.
What is your character's secret dream or desire, the one they've never told anyone?
To have a pack of dogs and several spouses someday, retiring to be a shooting instructor or trainer of some sort.
How will your character die?
Ideally, in bed, but they know well enough that they're more likely to go out in a fight. An expendable body for a greater cause.
Does your character have any powers that the hexarchate would consider "exotic" (magical)?
No. Just brawn and simple weapons.
What do you (the player) enjoy most in an RPG?
I love collaborative storytelling events and have been doing text based online RPGs of one sort or another since ~2002. I never know where they're going to end up, and it's always a fun journey to get to the end.
You have 100 words to tell me anything else you want me and the other players to know about your character. Do it here.
They have some kind of learning disability that made the Kel seem attractive (in the simplicity of following orders as an soldier) however they ended up doing security on a moth, rather as a garden Kel, and their dissatisfaction grew from there. I as the player think their neurodivergence has something with them ending up as a crash hawk. They deserted not because they were afraid, but because they weren't going to die on a stupid order
They are very physical, learn best kinetically, and enjoy being friendly with their team, provided they view their teammates as people they respect.

An ex-kel crashhawk (never formally out processed), now a mercenary on the edges of the Hexarchate. With no options for a better life on planet, pragmatic Seyli enlisted, embracing the fact that they could at any time be sacrificed. It offered a more interesting life than running the family foodcart. Seyli is hardworking, but isn't particularly academic. They're not fond of Shuos games as their mind struggles to process the complicated steps (they'd have never been a strategist or tactician).
Physically, they're stocky/muscular, black hair in an undercut with a long ponytail and brown eyes. They had several mods done once coming through the time rift and have a flat chest and wide hips.
They are very physical, learn best kinetically. They're proficient at firearms and hand to hand combat, but don't duel. They much prefer some kind of MMA fighting.
They have some kind of learning disability that made the Kel seem attractive (in the simplicity of following orders as a soldier) however they ended up doing security on a moth, rather as a garden Kel, and their dissatisfaction grew from there. I as the player think their neurodivergence has something with them ending up as a crash hawk. They aren't stupid, and infact has a small complex over being seen as stupid, but they know intelligence and wisdom wouldn't be their highest stats. They think better with their body and in movement.
They deserted not because they were afraid, but because they weren't going to die on a stupid order. There was an opportunity and keeping in line with their signifier of Ashhawk Wheeling, they took it and ran.
They have a lot of unresolved distress and fear over their Kel desertion. They don't know if they are Kel anymore, and that identity had meant a lot to them. They still don't know how they feel about being a crashhawk and is afraid to look at it. This is leading to some quiet depression and visible anxiety.
Seyli enjoys being friendly with their team, provided they view their teammates as people they respect. It gets complicated when they don't have respect for the people they are serving with/for. They don't want to be in charge and crave strong leadership.

Character name: Ione Camlin [Camlin is the family name, Ione her given name, so it'd be 'Camlin Ione' to most of the Rebellion]
One-paragraph (100 words) summary of your character.
Ione started out her adult life a physician training and working on a war-torn planet; over a hundred deaths in her arms were ninety-some too many and she ended up following an interdimensional peacekeeping organization off the planet as one of its agents. Years later, she is a capable combat medic spending more time on the 'combat' than on the 'medic' and really enjoys detonation from tiny fingertip-size bursts to blowing up buildings. Chatty, sociable people-person who tends to quickly endear people to her and prefers working in a team. She'd rather talk about everyone else than herself.
NOTE: In the following section, limit your answers to up to 100 words per question.
===
How did your character first learn of the hexarchate?
It's on file with HQ as an extant world, so likely in a class a while back -- the spontaneous rifts came to her higher-ups' attention recently. Ione drew the short straw, since there's no guarantee, based on the 'spontaneous' part, that the rift could be manipulated in order to bring her home again even if they were able to harness one to send her in.
Why did your character join this rebellion?
The people she works for would clearly see it as the best possible option when it comes to their organization's involvement in the hexarchate's general existence - improving things in other universes is kind of what they do. So far as she's been able to glean information, it seems logical to Ione as well. She has skills she can offer, and she might be stuck here forever, so here she is.
What type of role would your character play in a mission?
The distraction -- from shorting out a light source to blowing up a panel to shooting people with the poison darts she just made since toxicology was her favorite class in medical school. Or she'll just knock someone out with a conveniently-found heavy object. Diversions are her strongest point. That said, she's also capable of patching up injuries (sometimes also using conveniently found objects) at a higher level than simple first aid.
What kinds of missions would your character like to see?
Ione is biggest on either opportunities to blow things up/set things on fire or information-extracting spying, though she's also solid in a brawl. (Note that her player cannot write combat to save her life, so be nice to us.)
What is your character's secret dream or desire, the one they've never told anyone?
Primarily: to never, ever be alone. She'd love a permanent family and pets (the stranger the better) and maybe even children around, whether or not they are hers, but the highest order is having someone with her always so she never has only herself to bounce off of.
How will your character die?
A head injury she ignores for too long, allowing it to become much more serious than it initially may have seemed.
Does your character have any powers that the hexarchate would consider "exotic" (magical)?
Passive empathy. Ione is capable of reading feelings (NOT thoughts) when in physical contact with others. She's experienced enough that this ability is in off-mode by default and has to be consciously used -- unless someone is having such a strong burst of emotion that they're essentially breaking down her wall. This ability can be used against her, since certain extreme emotions would be incapacitating, hence the reason she's trained it enough to not be using it by default. It's not something she's likely to use unless told to (the mission leader will be informed of the ability in case it can be useful). It's "passive" because she can't use her touch of psionics to change others' emotions or overwhelm them with her own feelings.
What do you (the player) enjoy most in an RPG?
Character development and story advancement; I like all the surprises that come out of nowhere with people working together, and seeing what makes different characters tick, how everyone responds to things thrown at them, and where the connections in the group end up leading the story (as well as how relationships change).
You have 100 words to tell me anything else you want me and the other players to know about your character. Do it here.
Ione's apparent age (late 20s based on OOC standards) and bright personality really do not indicate the things she is capable of and she's very easily underestimated. She's both smarter and older than she looks! She is also very poor with mathematics and thus despite her intelligence will end up in over her head in situations that require knowing how to numbers. Despite being good at people Ione can also be needling and nosy and push too much.

Character Application: Shuos Reshad
Date: 2018-11-08 05:24 pm (UTC)RPG DW account (if separate): n/a; I'll update if that changes.
How can we get in touch with you? (email, DW messaging, other): DW messaging, email at redsixwing at redsixwing dot com, Discord
Character name: Shuos Reshad
One-paragraph (100 words) summary of your character.
Reshad was just shy of adulthood when her world was annexed. A pliable, intelligent youth, she was taken from her family, relocated, and reeducated in a Vidona school. She aimed to join the Shuos as her best shot at attaining any level of influence within the conquering hexarchate. She couldn't beat them, so she joined them, and harbored a secret fury.
After a disastrous first mission, she was remade, renamed, and reassigned. She became an infiltrator, shifting between social classes, genders, and societies as required, studying the enemy to become them, and shedding whole identities when they are done.
NOTE: In the following section, limit your answers to up to 100 words per question.
===
How did your character first learn of the hexarchate?
When the Andan appeared with promises of improved lifestyles, powerful exotics, and social harmony. The government of her nation was receptive to the messages of the hexarchate, and helped them to annex the world.
Only when the Kel and Vidona advanced from their landing site in her capital city did she realize that the means of the easy life promised by the Andan were torture and repression. She was a child; she still blames herself for not doing anything as her society was altered beyond recognition.
Why did your character join this rebellion?
She hates the requisite uniformity of the hexarchate, but still wants the luxuries afforded to the favored citizen.
She's worked herself around to believing that the latter can be had without the former. (Whether she's right or not is another question.)
What type of role would your character play in a mission?
In Shadowrun terms, she's the Face.
Reshad is good at speeding the wheels of bureaucracy, causing officials to look the other way at the right moment, and getting herself and her team in- and out- of danger. Weak in a fight, she's more likely to manipulate than shoot, more likely to brazen her way through with social engineering than hide. Her charisma is her weapon, and understanding her enemy her greatest shield.
What kinds of missions would your character like to see? (e.g. spying, opportunities for romance, intrigue, diplomacy, etc.)
Spying, intrigue, infiltration, exfiltration are all things she'd enjoy. She idolizes the historical, terrifying Shuos Jedao, so she'd likely enjoy a mission with the Kel even if she's temperamentally a poor fit with the conformist, rigid military.
What is your character's secret dream or desire, the one they've never told anyone?
She wants to be deeply understood, to have someone - even an enemy - who can pierce the layered masks and know who she is at the core, and accept the complexity of a person whose vocation and career are built on deception.
How will your character die?
She considers it likely that some day, her cover will be compromised, and she'll be made an example by whatever group she was attempting to infiltrate. (If she's working against the hexarchate, she's at some point going to have to face the idea of being tortured as a heretic. She really doesn't want to think about that.)
Does your character have any powers that the hexarchate would consider "exotic" (magical)?
No.
What do you (the player) enjoy most in an RPG?
I love character play and the details of worldbuilding. Small, slice-of-life moments in other worlds are a favorite too. Conflicting loyalty, failure and recovery, and general angst are favorite plot elements. RP is escapism for me, so I do like to see Our Heroes succeed in the end, but the path can be torturous and I'll be on board for it.
You have 100 words to tell me anything else you want me and the other players to know about your character. Do it here.
Reshad runs on loyalty. Earn it, and she'll move the stars for you.
She misses her family terribly, and won't admit it even to herself. Someone who knows of them and their fate would have a significant lever to apply.
She has at least two prior names, one of which was her birth name. Using those will get a strong reaction, although what kind depends entirely on context.

Character name: Zagfehan Mafyyil
One-paragraph (100 words) summary of your character.
Mafyyil is an aspiring young (19 yo) Hafn poet – or rather, she was one, until her instructors maliciously let her fail most of her classes (her work simply didn’t possess the gravitas usually associated with lentils) and she was volunteered for the army instead. There, a careful assessment of her talents was done, and she was deemed to be most suited to serve in one of the flying casket things. Before she could be destroyed by Cheris‘ swarm, her casket accidentally ended up in one of the space-time rifts, promptly glitched and spew her out alive and mostly unharmed.
NOTE: In the following section, limit your answers to up to 100 words per question.
===
How did your character first learn of the hexarchate?
The barbarian invaders her homeworld is currently at war with? Hard to miss with daily propaganda messages and war reports coming in. Also, in poetry class, she had to read and analyze some Andan poetry written in
Barbarian GibberishHe*archate High Language, which is also the only reason Mafyyil will be able to communicate with other characters. Fortunately she’s good with languages (or so she thinks). Why did your character join this rebellion?
Since no one has told her what exactly was going to happen after being stitched together with various flora and fauna (it would be bad policy to hand out too much information), at first she’ll have to assume everything has been going according to plan, and she’s supposed to serve her empire by nibbing the he*archate in the bud. She’s occasionally a bit naive so it might take her a while to figure out something went seriously wrong. By then, she’ll probably have an opinion (and objectives) of her own.
What type of role would your character play in a mission?
Oh, I think once she’s had an opportunity to reflect her situation properly, she’ll just want to shoot some people… Too bad that as a glorified power source she hasn’t received any weapons training. However, I think she’ll actually have some aptitude for this as long as someone tells her at whom to point the gun. Also, she speaks several foreign languages, which might be an asset depending on the type of mission.
What kinds of missions would your character like to see? (e.g. spying, opportunities for romance, intrigue, diplomacy, etc.)
She’d love to be a spy, and would be fascinated by intrigue! Unfortunately she’s not particularly suited for the job, what with being just slightly gullible, and stuck in a society and culture she doesn’t understand. Maybe with some training she’ll make a decent assassin. (The motivation is clearly there.) I don’t think she’s very interested in romance at this point.
What is your character's secret dream or desire, the one they've never told anyone?
To be a famous and revered poet. Now that she’s gone to the past, I think she’d do anything to somehow smuggle one of her masterpieces into the canon of Hafn classical literature! Maybe her Ode to Soy will manage?
How will your character die?
She’s too gullible for her own good, and surrounded by sneaky people carrying out dangerous operations. Not the best combination even if these guys are technically Mafyyil’s allies! (She’s clearly in danger from „friendly fire“.) Also, there’s lots of near-death opportunities for her in being a hobbyist spy/assassin.
Does your character have any powers that the hexarchate would consider "exotic" (magical)?
Um, being alive after being stitched together with peonies (that still grow out of her skin) and a dead kangaroo (that thankfully fell off)? Otherwise – no. Nothing active or useful.
What do you (the player) enjoy most in an RPG?
Character interaction and the evolving storyline. I should probably mention my roleplaying experience is limited to the usual childhood The Dark Eye rounds and some unmoderated purely text-based RP that was, basically, storytelling in a group. I’ve never been particularly ambitious about reaching playing goals or whatever – my character can fail as long as she fails in an entertaining way.
You have 100 words to tell me anything else you want me and the other players to know about your character. Do it here.
Physically, Mafyyil is short, slim, with medium brown skin and white-blonde hair. She’s stitched together with some shrubbery that’s very much alive (and re-grows if anyone blasphemously tries to remove it). Technically, she’d probably have to identify as female plant now (her religion demands it), but since the High Language lacks the correct pronouns, she’s least offended by she/her. She’s not stupid, she just sometimes needs a bit of time to think situations through. She’s also quite good with visual-spatial stuff. She fundamentally believes in other people, but will retaliate if that belief proves unjustified.

How can we get in touch with you? (email, DW messaging, other): Email (e dot aufde at the google mail service) or Discord (redshiftnova#4103)
Character name: Shuos Aymad (Evek Aymad)
One-paragraph (100 words) summary of your character.
Aymad is a school administrator and assistant instructor (part time) at Shuos Academy Secondary, which is also where he trained. He tracked as an analyst, worked for a time as part of a hound team on loan to a Kel swarm, and now would really rather be left alone with his syllabus spreadsheets and his hobbies. (Unsurprising for his past career, said hobbies are invariant long-arms marksmanship and competitive nonlethal unarmed combat...) He looks to be in his mid-thirties, on the rounded side of stocky, with the typical tan skin/dark hair/dark eyes combination common across the Hexarchate.
How did your character first learn of the hexarchate?
He is (on his mothers' sides) third-generation Shuos with a boisterous extended family, mostly in faction or faction-adjacent service.
Why did your character join this rebellion?
After falling through a rift and assuming he'd never be able to get home, it was an even mix of 'the h*archate is an unsustainable system built on expansion and murder, this needs optimization' and 'everything is horrible forever I may as well burn it down and see what happens'.
What would make your character consider giving up the cause?
Sufficiently convincing evidence that the task is impossible, or will result in an even more expansionist/heresy-farming successor society. Or, depending on his mental state, a guaranteed trip home back to his original time.
Name something your character does not want to lose.
Perceived personal autonomy. He avoids thinking about the mechanics of formation instinct too deeply. Aymad also has an almost incoherent phobia of psych surgery, even for benevolent reasons.
Name something your character would die for.
Not much. *Probably* sheer spite.
Name something your character would kill for.
The success of any current mission, but not for his own benefit. (Assassination is *work*, and he's picky about what he'll put effort into.)
Who is your character's best friend?
His partner of eight years, a municipal district IT director planetside near Shuos Academy Secondary. The jury is still out on whether they're emotionally healthy for each other, and the end of their contracted marriage is likely why they've been able to remain friends. They're both persnickety about weird work-related minutiae and have somewhat unreasonable tempers. (And hilariously different taste in lovers, which has become a running joke.) Think Statler and Waldorf, but with content warnings and questionable choice in whiskey.
Describe your character's perfect partner (romantic or friend or coworker, your choice).
His ideal coworker is someone with both patience and longer-term planning skill. He meshed well with his moth team because they realized that if they just handed him all the information *first*, he'd spit out assignments and timelines and take care of yelling at the Kel to stop acting like the Shuos had a faction-exotic fixing-your-damn-problems power. He'd love to be able to spend his time creating order out of short-term chaos, and then handing the setup off to someone else for actual execution.
What is your character's secret dream or desire, the one they've never told anyone?
His fondest daydream is to open a hole-in-the-wall bar in a small town (what passes for a small town) somewhere. He knows he'd be horrible at it (he lacks the patience for customers), but planning the building layout and organizing menus and researching shipping costs has been his Soothing Thing for so long he just kinda rolls with it these days. Not even his partner knows.
How will your character die?
Goes for a pint in the wrong section of the station, gets in a shouting match with a boxmoth's crew, successfully initiates a fistfight, does not successfully survive due to being completely hammered. (Or survives, then attempts to continue fighting whatever medical response he receives, gets tranqued for his stupidity, and has a massive anaphylactic reaction to the tranquilizer.)
Does your character have any powers that the hexarchate would consider "exotic" (magical)?
No.
What do you (the player) enjoy most in an RPG?
Solving puzzles! I haven't played a completely text-run RPG in a couple years, so I'm a bit rusty.
===
You have 500 words to tell me anything else you want me and the other players to know about your character. Do it here.
I am utterly pants at answering open-ended questions (at least without coffee). I'm trying to avoid looking like Magical Space James Bond, and hopefully it's working?
Apropos of nothing, Aymad is *such* a cat person and has a competence-crush on Zehun approximately the size of the entire Milky Way. His signifier is likely something in the Ashhawk family, and OH MAN if you want to send him flying off the handle tell him what a great Kel he'd make and sound like you mean it. He's skimming third-year ethics course docs off a server at Rahal Academy Prime to keep his grid-diving practice up to date, and this may have something to do with why his loyalty to the Hexarchate snapped so easily.
