I will get the next move out sometime tomorrow; today ended up being eaten by household &c. obligations.

Just a note that I will be in D.C. for the ALA conference from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23. I should have internet but my availability may be limited thanks to Writer Obligations. If something goes south with the game, the fastest way to reach me will be requiescat at gmail dot com; please bear with me if I can't get back to y'all right away.

Friends, [suspected] -archs, downwellfolk: it is I, Eshegen Rahal Eshegen Virmad, bringing a plan to defeat the -archate once and for all(?). We all are aware, of course, of the temporal portals which, we have discovered, also permit travel between realities.

One of those realities — indeed, many of them, by the simple laws of probability, or something like that, I assume — must be a reality where the galaxy is populated not by humans but, rather, by sentient cats. A reality where the seven faction emblems are not Kniferose, Ashhawk, Mirrorweb, Voidmoth, Scrywolf, Ninefox, and Stingray, but instead Knifecatnip, Ashgriffin, Mirrorwaterbowl, Voidmoth (for hunting), Scrylion, Cat-o-Ninetails, and Catfish. Where everything is fluffy except when its belly is touched without permission, in which case it is clawed.

It is to this reality that I propose we turn for help in enacting my plan. By the simple laws of probability, probably, if there are radicals and revolutionaries in our reality(ies), they must, too, exist among the felines who represent our better — nay, our best — selves. I submit to you all that the most effective way to defeat the tyrants who govern our reality(ies) is with their help: let us unleash on them, unsuspecting, a flood of cats. They will be overrun and unable to bring themselves to react with force. We will crush them beneath our allies’ fuzzy little paws.

This, my friends, will be our salvation! This will be our victory!

Thank you.

Here is a recap of the very eventful Move 2.4!

Sasha has messaged the team, summoning them to a meeting in the common room. After sending the message, she heads there herself, and starts pouring shots of rosemary arak. She gives a glass to Sulen as they enter the room, holding it out formally, with both hands; she gives Reshad a similarly formal presentation, and an equally formal smile. Seyli gets a choice between arak and sparkling water, and a lopsided grin.

Here is a recap of Move 2.3, in which the team kidnaps Jedao.

[A GM question with no possible ulterior motives for active players: How many characters would be interested in a Vraselian pseudo-dragon (like Fluffy) of their very own?

(That nest contains is going to contain something real soon.) ]

I've re-upped the paid account for [community profile] hexarchate_rpg for another year ($35) so we can all continue to benefit from comment searches and so on. Donations (yoon@yoonhalee.com, Paypal) are appreciated but not necessary. :)

[Housekeeping notes: We're fast-forwarding a bit yet again, to assume that you have safely gotten away from the security conference site.]

The Cantata warbles cheerfully in greeting, and seems to be curious as to why there is an additional human on board. It asks Alaric and Sasha, Friend? It also seems to have communicated some basic notion of caution to the mothlings, because none of the mothlings are trying to get at the newcomer.

Fluffy the Vraselian pseudo-dragon's nest has stabilized in size to...about five or six Fluffies, but she is now concentrating on decorating it with anything that glitters that isn't locked down. She will also happily suck up to any PCs who want to offer her shinies.

Jedao continues to be compliant and friendly, although he keeps asking about the dance. He looks like he will go along with whatever security measures the team decides to put in place getting him onto the Cantata.

[Okay, folks! You should tell me what you're doing with the kidnapee.]

Yeah, I know--this is the last one for a while. Yay book promo? I'll be in Texas from March 21 (Thursday) to March 24 (Sunday). I should have internet access during that time, but because of my schedule, my availability may be limited. If anything urgent happens that requires my attention, the best way to reach me is emailing requiescat at gmail dot com.

[Housekeeping notes: we're fast-forwarding a bit to the security conference itself. Y'all can be assumed to have obtained anything reasonable during the shopping trip, from toys for the mothlings to jams for Sasha, and whatever else. We can also assume that Seyli more than adequately trained the Lanterner assassins in the use of the equipment sold to them.]

The Cantata docked smoothly in its assigned berth at the conference's hosting station. Remi promised that he would keep the mothlings out of sight, although it seemed suspiciously clear that he was looking forward to running intelligence tests on them in the guise of "games" manufactured with the aid of the matter printer and some toy schematics he picked up during the shopping trip.

Meanwhile, Fluffy the Vraselian pseudo-dragon keeps having to be shooed out of various public areas and appears to be building a nest out of scavenged materials.

It wasn't too difficult getting basic tools/implements/weapons past the conference's security. Paranoia is high, but so are distractions. The designated "dueling fan" is within sight at the far end of a hall with highly decorated vendor booths and poster displays. She is plump, wide-eyed, and deceptively excitable in affect, although Seyli knows from working with her during the trip that she's a quick study and she's really good with knives. She is, in fact, in duelist cosplay, complete with a hot pink Space Styrofoam boffer weapon.

Two booths away from the Lanterner "dueling fan," General Shuos Jedao can be seen with his aide, talking seriously to a highly muscular, tattooed, and decorative company representative. The banner behind the booth advertises "delicious hazelnut gianduja" ration packs laced with various popular stimulants.

[NOTE: So there are two big options for getting involved in this move!
(a) Part of the extraction team removing Jedao, or
(b) Staying behind and preparing the Cantata for extraction. In particular, Remi is looking for one or more volunteers to help him socialize and/or test the mothlings.

Obviously, you're welcome to take a third option if one occurs to you. If you need help brainstorming involvement, please feel free to message me or ask in the comments.]

Here is a recap of the discussion of whether we should assassinate Jedao, and the following shopping trip. (I'm happy to update the recap if folks want to keep posting--in particular, the shopping trip is a nice opportunity for some lower-stakes character interaction--but it seemed like having a summary in hand before the next move would be useful!)

If you want a list of all of the moves and recaps, you can find one on the Mission Information page of the wiki!

Here is a recap of Move 2.2 and the associated planning move.

Our moves have been on the long side, lately, and my recaps are tending long as well. Should I be more concise? It's fun quoting all the dialogue--but maybe I should focus more on essential plot developments?

This is at [personal profile] vass's suggestion and I apologize for not implementing it earlier!

Basically, comments to this post are for objects in/around the Cantata. As per [personal profile] vass's suggestion:
Like, "in Ashari's quarters, on the vanity table: one 15mL bottle made of dark blue glass, cork stopper, with the label 'Contingencies'. Empty." It'd be a way of adding canon details without timeline constraints or dialogue.

Guidelines:
- Common areas in the Cantata are free for anyone to object-decorate. Here's a list of the available rooms, including a map.

- PCs can decorate their own private bedrooms as they see fit. Other PCs should ask permission before adding an object to someone else's space--I suggest negotiating suggestions over PM.

- PCs can suggest decorations for NPCs' bedrooms, but the GM has veto power. The GM would prefer not to have to use veto at all, so use your best judgment! For example, if you think Gerae would obviously have a Space Rubik's Cube in his room, feel free! I'm happy for Gerae to have a Rubik's Cube. Tactical nuke, maybe not so much.

So sorry--my travel schedule should wind down after February. I'm going to be effectively out of town from Feb. 10 (Sunday) through Feb. 20 (Wednesday). I will probably have limited internet availability in the evenings but if I'm slow to respond, that's why. After I get back, I would like to move on to the next chapter, if folks can reach some kind of consensus on what they want the group to be doing re: the assassination--but do let me know if that's not enough time.

Sorry for the late notice--I've been sick and discombobulated.

I will be out of town from Jan. 28, Monday (tomorrow) through Jan. 30, Wednesday for book promotional reasons. While I'll be bringing my smartphone and laptop, I will have very, very limited time for internet due to my schedule.

I'm going to be catching up with responses just now, and apologize for delays; if anything blows up, you can probably best reach me by email (yoon at yoonhalee dot com / requiescat at gmail dot com).

[In the current move, Flute has just informed the team that they are to accompany a group of Lanterner assassins to a conference where the Lanterners will attempt to assassinate Jedao. This post is for reactions and plans, both in and out of character.]

Sasha's quiet as the group heads from the Catastrophe Axe back to the Cantata. She wants to have a cup of tea and spend a few hours working her way further into the Axe's grid, but work comes before play, and figuring out how to handle Flute's instructions will be a fuck of a lot of work.

Once everyone's safely on the Cantata and the lock has closed behind them, she starts issuing orders. "Grid, please ask Sulen to meet me in my office in twenty minutes, and inform everyone there will be a team meeting in the common room in one hour. Reshad, I'll want you in the meeting with Sulen."

She pulls her memory stick out of her pocket and gives it to Alaric. "Find Aymad, stick this in the minigrid--not in the main one--and see what you can find out about the watchers in Flute's system in the next hour."

Then she turns to Seyli. "I know you want to yell. Go ahead and do it. You've got twenty minutes." [These are heptarchate minutes, so it's more like ten minutes in our calendar.]

This is going to be a busy month for me, I'm afraid. I'm out of town literally all of next week, from Sunday, Jan. 13 to Friday, Jan. 18, on book tour. I will proooooobably have internet in the evenings when I get to retire to the hotel, but I may be slow to answer. I apologize for the inconvenience.

(I see there's at least one pending comment on the latest move; I have to leave for fencing class soon but I will respond to that and anything else that comes in tonight after class.)

[Sorry I didn't get this out earlier, y'all. Happy summer/winter holidays!]

The Cantata emerges from the rift on an approach to the Lanterner stronghold called Autumn Pyre. The Cantata hums very quietly to reassure the mothlings, then falls silent; it's been impressed on the Cantata that discretion will be necessary. For their part, the mothlings have free run of an enclosure with Fluffy the Vraselian pseudo-dragon, and both mothlings and dragonet seem to be entertaining each other with games of tag and hide-and-seek. They are happy to play with any humans who stop by, as well.

Scan reveals that Autumn Pyre is heavily fortified by the standards of the day, mostly with invariant weapons like railguns and missiles. A few dozen moths are already docked there, and several more are patrolling the area. Two small Lanterner patrol moths, nearly identical, veer lazily toward the Cantata.

Patrol moth #1 hails the Cantata in several different languages, including the high language. For its part, it transmits the Lanterner emblem--a stylized yellow lantern against a blue background--and the speaker is requesting that you halt and identify yourselves. "This is the Lanterner Federacy in the year 852," the speaker goes on, "under the benevolent rule of the Honorable Aramis kae Pharon. Are you human? What are your hospitality requirements?"

[Feel free to take advantage of the between-moves planning post if you need to, and to make whatever preparations, including rearranging the Cantata's variable layout, you deem necessary.]

I just wanted to post a clarification, both for old players and new, re: Making Stuff Up as worldbuilding and other details for this game. Please feel free to assume that you have broad latitude in making things up if they're not specified in canon or on the game wiki! I love seeing what y'all come up with. :)

The one area where you should perhaps be cautious is if you're doing worldbuilding that affects another player's character. In that case, it would be courteous to consult that player about the best way to handle your creation and whether they're okay with it, or they'd be okay with it with a few changes, or it doesn't work for them, or what.

You're always welcome to ask me directly if you have a question concerning the world of the game, but you are also free to invent your own details as players, whatever you're more comfortable with.
