Move 19 (Chapter 1.19)

(Thanks to [personal profile] zuhrovet for keeping the Station Moongray Timeline on the game wiki updated.)

Year 361, Month Three, Day Seventeen (Monday), ~0550

Just outside of Medical

Sulen has just been abandoned by Mikodez, who has headed into the reception area of Medical. They can hear Fluffy chirruping now that she's finished gobbling down the treats that Mikodez has fed her. Would it be best to go after Mikodez and try to contain the damage, or stand guard outside with the voidcreature? Baby Crowned-With-Eyes is wriggling very alarmingly in the sack and making ridiculously cheerful humming noises--and the spilled coffee still hasn't been cleaned up, and is probably a slipping hazard.

In Medical: antechamber

A triage nurse gives Mikodez a distinctly unfriendly look as he approaches with a caged Fluffy in tow. "You've had enough warnings," he says. "I don't care if you're Andan Bokali's special guests, you're disturbing our legitimate patients." He reaches over to a desk and pushes a red call button marked SECURITY.

In Medical: the actual patient

Istradez is, despite being awfully cavalier about his own condition, smiling reluctantly at Iawa for their solicitousness. Meanwhile, although Alaric has instructed Mikodez to fetch a nurse with float chair and discharge paperwork, he hears the triage nurse shooing Mikodez out. If they want a float chair, they're going to have to wrangle on themselves; it's clear that relying on Mikodez is not...the best idea considering how annoyed Medical is with him.

[Assuming that Alaric has called the "Bumblebee," Ashari (running as NPC) responds via lokwor.]

Ashari sounds very concerned about Istradez's status. "Bad enough to need a float chair? I'll dispatch one of the Kel to prep Medical," they tell Alaric.

on the "Bumblebee": the thieving Rahal

Gerae, taking Virmad's silence as a license to spill all his emotional upsets, will continue babbling about what a stressful year he's had unless Virmad interrupts him. If Virmad doesn't bring up the topic himself, Gerae will add plaintively that he could use some coffee (or stronger stimulant) and that he hasn't had food for a full day and could they get an early breakfast?

on the "Bumblebee": "xeno"mathematics the Cartesian way

The moth ponders Sasha's symbols and graphs for several minutes, then returns a graph with y = log10x, y = x, y = x2, and y = 10x. Its humming has definitely quieted--perhaps the math is distracting it, or is taking more of its concentration.

[It's too bad I don't remember any LaTeX...?!]

Comms to EVERYONE, marching orders from Ashari

Ashari (running as NPC) calls everyone via lokwor, sounding grim, and instructs that they would like everyone to be on the "Bumblebee" and prepared to make a run for it within the hour. This means that Ashari expects Sulen and Virmad to prepare for a (remote) confrontation with the station administrator as per the plan.

In Medical with Istradez (paging Sulen)

[personal profile] vass 2018-03-24 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Iawa has one eye on Imsayed, one eye on Alaric's back as he approaches the nurse, and doesn't have any eyes to spare to look in the direction Avrayen went. The Shuos motto is finally making sense to her.

One hour should be plenty to get back to the ship if nothing else goes wrong, but they don't like the chances of nothing else going wrong. They send their own lokwor message to Sulen: "The kid's heading your way. Can you make sure he stays with you? Damion's getting a float chair for pt, and I'm staying with him."

To Imsayed: "Do you still have your lokwor with you?" If he doesn't, she passes on Ashari's message and decides not to mention the missing lokwor until everyone's back aboard so we can get out of here.

Iawa thinks she's subtle (paging Sasha)

[personal profile] vass 2018-03-25 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Iawa can't lipread, but the gap between Imsayed's cheerful tone and his facial expression and attempted gestures clues her in. She raises her eyebrows. Someone got at Imsayed's lokwor while he was unconscious? Shit. How compromised are we? And for how long? Iawa definitely wants Sasha's input on this.

[How security-unaware is Iawa? Enough to send a lokwor message telling Sasha that the lokwors may have been compromised? I am literally rolling a d20. If it's over 10 she'll have an attack of good sense and not do the thing. *rolls* ...10. Okay, she'll *try* to fudge it.]

Iawa sends Sasha this message: "Remember what happened to my tablet? Do you think that could happen to the lokkis too?"

After a moment's thought, remembering a certain soft toy Ton gave her, and what its insides looked like when they took it apart together [yes, Iawa had a Furby] she adds "Is there any way they could be modified to be used for voice communication? That might be useful in an emergency. We could make them speech-activated in case someone fell unconscious again, so we'd find them sooner. Just an idea."

[Creepy heretical toys! *sings this phrase to the tune of Follow The Yellow Brick Road* Imagine all the scary stories hexarchate youngsters could tell. "But her youngest parent never told her that her grandmother was a heretic. And her youngest parent thought they'd gotten rid of all grandma's belongings, but one day the girl opened an old box in the cellar and found this little cardboard tube. It was a kaleidoscope, but the reflectors were asymmetrical (Ooh!), and they were set up to make forbidden shapes! (Ah!) And she looked through it! (Ooh!) And she turned to paper, right then and there. (*screaming*)"]

What the fuck, Iawa, if you want voice communication, use the Voice Call button, don't ask for some kind of spoofable nightmare.

But that's probably not what Iawa really wants to know. Fuck.

Sasha messages:

Many lokwor configurations are possible. Do you require on-site technical assistance? ~ Tech. B.

She images and forwards Iawa's messages to Ashari via the Wasp's grid, with the additional note:

I'm not sure what security feature Iawa's worried about, but I don't like it. If I'm needed on station, may I take Ankat with me?

Sasha can't stare at the grid until Iawa or Ashari answers; she can barely stand still, as it is. Might as well get back to working on the air filters. Some nice physical climbing over ducts sounds like just the ticket, right now.

[We'll assume that communicating with alien life forms is just that distracting. Feel free to message Sasha back; as long as Ashari doesn't clear her to leave the ship until her current present, I think we're all right.]

Iawa hadn't noticed the Voice Call button yet

[personal profile] vass 2018-03-26 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Iawa eyes Imsayed's lokwor. She's about to tell Sasha it can wait until they're back aboard, but then she has this sudden moment of what if it's a bomb?

Iawa to Sasha:

Yes please, if you're not too busy.

Casting around for something safe to talk about, she turns to Imsayed again. He's got something on his neck. Wait, is that... "Um, did someone... draw in marker on your neck?"

Clarification re marker drawings

[Uh, I should probably mention that I originally meant this to be yet another inconclusive way for Mikodez to tell if he's in a scenario. (and to see if Istradez knows Kel drum code, if he'd sleep through being poked in the neck, and also, metallic markers!!) So I'll continue to be good with whatever happens to those scribbles.]

Sasha's response, after a bit of time, is:

Will be there shortly. Let me know if you leave Medical.

[Still wondering what Istradez will say about the marker!]

time travel problems

[personal profile] zuhrovet 2018-03-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Are you OK assuming Iawa hit the "delay sending message" button by mistake? By my reckoning, Iawa's sending this message around the same time Sasha starts teaching the moth Kirrish rounds, which would've been weirdly cheerful behavior if there was an immediate technical emergency looming.

Alternatively, Sasha can request a meeting with Ashari at 05:35, and they can ignore her until 05:60.]

[personal profile] vass 2018-03-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[I've looked through the timeline again and reread the recap, and here's the sequence of events as I understand them:

Move 19 begins at ~0550, with Ashari telling everyone to be aboard and ready to make a run for it in an hour (i.e. at ~0650.) Sasha continues singing with the moth, having already been told by Ashari (at ~0545, back in move 18, to be quiet), after which she takes Gerae's breakfast order.

Meanwhile, at ~0555, Iawa sends Sulen a lokwor message asking them to keep an eye on Mikodez.

At some point a little later on (~0555? ~0560? later?) Iawa asks Istradez about his lokwor, and then sends the message to Sasha.

I have to go afk now, but could you please let me know what needs adjusting and where I'm wrong? Thanks.]

Re: calendrical rot has set in again

[personal profile] zuhrovet 2018-03-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[The source of calendrical rot was that Sulen and Mikodez have been talking to each other, while folks on the station have been doing things that take time, such as Virmad taking a shower, Sasha engaging in excessive quantities of math, etc. So I initially had Sulen and Mikodez starting the move at 05:30. There's a bit of wiggle room, though, depending on how long Mikodez spent fidgeting in Medical after running away from Sulen and before the nurse called security. I played with the timeline and I've got the start of the move at around 05:40 for everyone, which I think syncs us well enough to move on with?

Apologies for making this more fiddly than it needs to be!]
