Re: Engineering

Oh no. Why now, when they were on a stealth infiltration and being boarded? Actually, that's a good question. Alaric pulls a handheld computer from his pocket and starts dictating.

"Moth appears to be exhibiting signs of agitation or unusual behavior, starting at... approximately three thousand seconds after exit from the rift, not sure of exact calendrical time," he says. "It shows awareness of diagnostic procedures - possibly associates them with comfort stemming from maintenance? No, scratch that, not enough information for a actual hypothesis. Two possible reasons for a change in status come to mind. First, a delayed reaction to changing from relative present to past, with accompanying changes in the high calendar. Second, it can detect the ship that is approaching, either through the ship's sensors or directly using whatever sensory apparatus it has."

He really shouldn't be doing this now, when strangers might waltz in. Still, if no one warned him of a tour, he could hardly be at fault, right? And checking out discrepancies in the drive when they might need to run away was only reasonable.

Alaric glances out the door. Not spying anyone, he programs the moth interface to send a simple binary signal down the same links it uses for the diagnostics - specifically, a sequence of primes. It's a first contact classic for a reason. Then he waits to see if anything changes.

[This course of action is logical, sensible, and sane.]
