"The families themselves sometimes covered up disgrace, in my time," Jedao says. "But the records were usually public, unless the mission itself was classified." He makes a moue. "It doesn't matter anymore--I've given up my rank." He rubs his left wrist, drawing attention to the broad scar there, and the fact of his bare hands. "It's been years since I went around ungloved."
